What does the human body need as much as it does food?

Rest.

Rest is a critical component in keeping the body healthy and functioning optimally.

The Oxford Dictionary tells us that to rest is to “cease work or movement in order to relax, sleep or recover strength.” If our body is stressed and overworked, it can suffer both physically and emotionally. Without adequate rest you can suffer from:

  • High blood pressure and the multitude of diseases that accompany it,such as heart attack, stroke, dementia, and kidney failure, just to name a few.
  • Burnout, which manifests as boredom, listlessness, and hopelessness.
  • Chronic fatigue.

There are many things that you can do to make sure that your body gets the rest it needs. The top three simplest and inexpensive things you can do are:

Be intentional

You have to want to take care of your body. When you consciously decide to get the rest your body needs, you’re setting yourself up to relax your mind, be sharper, and increase blood flow throughout your body. Additionally, you’ll improve relations with your family members and coworkers and be better at your job.

Take up a hobby

The cause of your stress can be working too hard — you need to relax. A calming hobby can be a good way to relax your mind. We should not run away with the idea that resting to recharge the body should be boring. You can engage in healthy and fulfilling activities such as yoga, painting, or pottery which you can enjoy while your body refuels.

Refocus

The best thing you can do if you’re stressed or fatigued is to tune out the influences that are stressing you out. If it means turning off your social media or unplugging the TV, do it! Shift your attention to spending time with family and improving yourself.

We’re living through unprecedented times and the events that are unfolding trigger stress and feelings of despair. The wage cuts or loss of employment, reorganizing our lives to include 100% online learning and adapting to new technologies while trying to meet the needs of family and work can be overwhelming.

Entrepreneurs should make a special effort to look out for the well-being of their employees — make sure they’re getting enough rest because employees who are well rested will perform better and be more productive than those who aren’t.

We all need to adapt to the changes that are happening around us. To get through successfully, we need to look out for each other or as they say, “be our brothers’ keeper”.

The success of your business depends on the quality of your employees. Working together to achieve excellence and come out on top means making sure that everyone is well-rested.
